During October, Steve began working on a database
- My goal is to plug the whole collection into a database, just so I can generate web pages and reports easily. Right now, the components are scattered across 8 web pages and 10 word documents. Not conducive to simple maintenance.
On October 3, Steve continued assembling the book.
- I've got all the photos in the book now, what remains is the production of the explanations pages. I'll probably do that tomorrow, with an eye towards not having to do any of it once I get to Winter Camp.

On July 22, 1999, Steve made a valiant, but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to recreate some dates.
- I admit it. I got lax in keeping up. I haven't lost any autographs or anything crazy like that, but I've definitely been a little slower than I should have been in my logging. I'm now totally caught up and everything is in one of the books (that's right, books). I haven't printed out the facer pages yet; but there's plenty of time.
(Translation for the Steve impaired: I don't have any other plans for Christmas Day -- yet!)
On April 3, 199, Steve continued regretting his words
- Okay, having said that about SMG having a clear margin with the only double, I received two more pictures of Courtney Cox today, just like the one I had earlier. Maybe it's just the name Gellar (she plays Monica Gellar on Friends)
On April 2, 1999, Steve received another Sarah Michele Gellar autograph
- This brings the SMG total to 4, giving her the record easily
On March 29, Steve continued assembling the book
- I put all the autographs I've received this year in the book and discovered two things: first, I'm out of the blue paper I'd been using as a backer; second, I'm out of space in the book. Guess I'll have to start "How Cool is Winter Camp? Volume II" soon.
On March 23, 1999, Ron missed John Major
- Had a chance to get an autograph from the former Prime Minister of
England at the Salomon Smith Barney Conference. I was sure there
would be too much security, so I skipped his speech and went home to see Steve and
Mom off. My assistant, Jon, informed me that there was little security and
that people could go up and say hello and get an autograph. He (my former employee) did
not think to get an autograph for camp. I doubt any of my assistants will make that mistake in the future.
On 2/16/99, Steve received his Bob Dole letter via return mail
- The address was lined through and someone wrote "Not Here" on the envelope in big letters
On 2/15/99, Steve received his Josie Cotton letter back
- Hmm. It would appear that my for pay scheme on addresses wasn't much (if any) better than the free ones I had used.

On January 28, Steve signed up for an address service
- Not sure it'll help, but it didn't cost much and I did find some addresses that had previously eluded me. I also found different (hopefully better!) addresses for a number of stars I had been hoping to hook up with.
On January 23, Steve received some stuff from Sean Reynolds
- I didn't receive an autograph yet, but I sure got a boatload of other stuff. He sent me 2 starters of Battletech, 1 of Netrunner, 8 really big dice, a pack of Magestorm, a pack I haven't been able to identify, 4 or 5 dragon champions, over 30 ultra-rare magic item dice, and a bunch of lapel pins.
If nothing else, it pays to suck up <grin>
On January 20, Steve mailed Sean Reynolds
- Sean used to be the webmaster for TSR. He is currently the Dragon Dice guru and is working on several other projects. I was writing him to get some complimentary dice and threw in an autograph request for the heck of it.
On 12/25/98, Steve completed work on the project for this year.
- I've added all the autographs Ron brought with him and assembled the book. All that remains is to go public with the book and this page.
On 12/25/98, Steve received the last autograph that will be at camp this year.
- William Shatner sent a small autographed photo and an invitation to join his fan club. It's unlikely that any further autographs will make it into the book this year.
On 12/18/98, Steve e-mailed Mark Bollman
- I told him about the project since I thought it might be funny to have it just sort of show up in the Winter Camp Trivia Test unannnounced. His one word response?
Wow!
Hopefully, he's a master of understatement.
On 12/19/98, Steve e-mailed Debby Foreman
- I wanted to ask her about the request thing; I figure she's the most likely person I could consult to tell me if there's some reason why female celebs would be so much less responsive than males. Thus far, she herself has been unresponsive, so maybe a little reminder will help <grin>.
On 12/19/98, Steve continued assembling the book
- I took all the entries for successful autographs so far and printed them on some cool paper. I then reorganized the book in chronological order. I thought about trying to do it by type or level of fame or something but couldn't come up with a good order. Besides, this way Steve Jackson gets to be first.
On 12/9/98, Steve explored the possibility that women were ignoring requests.
- Not sure if that's really the case, but here's the deal as of today: I've mailed out 108 requests (roughly). Thirty of those were sent to women. To date, only Rosie O'Donnell has sent an autograph; Jennifer Love Hewitt is the only other woman who even responded and, frankly, her response sucked.
Of the nearly eighty men I've sent requests to, more than twenty have already responded and not one of them has asked me to join their fan club. (That doesn't even count the nine guys I got through e-mail), which would make it more like 30 out of 90.
I don't know if women get more of these requests and therefore can't deal with them as quickly (although I can't imagine that any of them were more popular than Jim Carrey or Mel Gibson or some of the other men who have responded). The whole thing is just weird.
On 12/5/98, Steve received returned mail from George Carlin
- At least there was an expired forwarding order showing the correct address; it should be back in the mail on Monday.
On 11/22/98, Steve decided to stop sending requests by mail.
- Since our primary goal is to have these at Winter Camp, sending any more after today seems a little pointless. As it is, I'm sure we'll be seeing new autographs for most of '99.

During the week of 11/14-11/21, Steve looked for more addresses and for replacements for some existing addresses that had failed.
- I had pretty good success and came up with about 25 addresses. My total number of mailed requests is now 108. I've had about a dozen rejections that I was able to remail too. I recommend not buying clasp envelopes at Meijer's. They are of inferior quality
On 11/13/98, Steve e-mailed Deborah Foreman
- Okay, so I've been totally unable to find any sort of address for her but then I find a web page called "In Worship O' Deborah Foreman" which points me to a page that says it's her own personal homepage. It even has e-mail. I figure it beats nothing, so I send an e-mail sort of explaining what we're up to and asking her if she can help me out (at the same time, I'm skeptical -- celebrity e-mails aren't known for their reliability).
When I get home today, it turns out it really is her and she sends me her address. Life is good.
On 11/13/98, Steve received three more rejected letters
- This time around it was Christina Applegate, George Clooney, and Deborah Foreman. The first two I think will be easy, the last one may be more challenging.
On 11/9/98, Steve received a second Pat Sajak photo
- Nope, no difference; I was kind of excited when I saw the Wheel of Fortune return address. I figured it was either Vanna or a better Sajak. Denied. Same exact thing.
On 11/9/98, Steve received two more rejected letters
- This time is was Michael Keaton and Lisa Kudrow; working on new addresses for both.
On 11/6/98, Steve began mounting autographs
- All the autographs I've received to date are mounted and some sample art is in the book too. I'm not sure yet what to do for the other page. I might just print the results of our log effort here. Any suggestions?
On 11/7/98, Steve e-mailed Tom Hite of the band Nickel
- Nickel's song "Sensitive Man" appeared on the "Reptile Boy" episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. It was a good song and I've mail-ordered the disk (no major label so far). Anyhow, their web page included an e-mail address so I tried it; they're going to send me something as soon as I get them an SASE.
On 11/6/98, Steve met Robert Jordan
- The author of the best-selling Wheel of Time series made an appearance at the Southgate Waldenbooks & More. I was a little bummed because I'd hoped to get him to sign one of our cards, but that proved impossible; all he would sign was his books, on a specific page and only with his name. It beat a stick in the eye, but not by much. The line took over an hour to go through.
On 11/6/98, Steve mailed Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty and Courtney Love again
- Found new addresses for all of them. Apparently the "management" business is pretty volatile. I also found a page that would let you (allegedly) send an e-mail to Alyssa Milano, so I gave it a shot. Can't hurt.
On 11/6/98, Steve e-mailed the Edge
- The Edge is my favorite radio station so I sent them a note asking if they could sign some autographs and (maybe) collect a few musicians and stuff they meet. No response so far.
On 11/6/98, Steve received more return to sender letters
- It's a bad day for beautiful women on the autograph project; I got back Alyssa Milano, Shannon Doherty and Courtney Love today.
On 11/4/98, Steve mailed semi-form letters to:
- Tori Amos (described just this morning as a red-haired goddess by one of my favorite DJ's)
Drew Carey (The Drew Carey Show, Whose Line is it Anyways?)
Ryan Stiles (The Drew Carey Show, Whose Line is it Anyways?)
Christina Applegate (Don't Tell Mom..., Married: with Children, The Big Hit)
Jon Lovitz (Lots of B-movies, Saturday Night Live)
On 11/4/98, Steve pursued corrected e-mails
- I managed to find a different address for everyone except Harry Anderson (from Night Court). The quest continues.
On 11/4/98, Steve received more letters back.
- I got back Matt LeBlanc, Mike Myers, Dennis Miller, Leonard Nimoy, and Harry Anderson. Guess I had some bad addresses. More back to the net for me.
On 11/2/98, Steve received the letters he sent to Bill Murray and Rosie O'Donnell back as undeliverable, no forwarding
- Guess it's back to the net for some new/different addresses.
On 11/2/98, Steve explored getting Robert Jordan's autograph
- Robert Jordan (author of "The Wheel of Time" series) will be doing a book signing at Waldenbooks of Southgate. I have a friend who used to work there, so I'm checking to see if she can hook us up with some express treatment. Also, the advertising says he'll only be signing hard covers, so I checked with Ron to see which hardcover to get and then asked my friend Colleen to see if she could hook us up with the hardcover and a signed WCFS notecard. More details later.
On 11/2/98, Steve continued his WOTC Quest
- I identified the various Wizards guys I got autographs from and even acquired some sample cards for the artists involved.
On 11/1/98, Steve mailed Mark Evanier
- Mark Evanier is a famous comic book writer; he wrote Groo, DNAgents and Crossfire, three of my all-time favorite comics.
On 11/1/98, Steve mailed Jolly Blackburn
- Jolly is the creator of Knights of the Dinner Table, one of the funniest comic books (if you're a gamer) ever written.
On 11/01/98, Steve began assembling a scrapbook of autographs
- I bought some mounting corners, card stock, and a binder. I already had a bunch of sheet protectors. My basic plan is to have the book be designed to be open; the left page will explain who the Autograph is from and how we got it. The right will show the item(s) we got...
On 10/31/98, Steve received Ted Nugent's autograph
- Ted becomes the first person in the mass mailing to reply by sending me an autographed photo

On October 21, Steve began collecting addresses
- I've started using the Internet to locate addresses of some celebrities (my faves anyhow). My goal is to get a letter mailed before the end of the month (maybe even before the end of the week). I already have envelopes and postage (this plan has been semi-formed for a while) so it could happen pretty soon. More details to follow. Hopefully, this will work; if we don't get more big names soon, the whole thing could wind up looking semi-pathetic.
On 9/9/98, Ron began working on getting a Johnnie Mitchell autograph
- My friend, Chip McNeer came in and told me that the Spider Sally autograph was a done deal. He
also indicated he is working on a mortgage for former Al-Pro Tight End Johnnie Mitchell. He said that
an autograph will be forthcoming.
On 8/15 & 16, Steve missed Magnus ver Magnusson
- The World's strongest men made an appearance at the Michigan Renaissance Festival and I never managed to get over there to get autographs. The only two whose names I recognized were Magnus and Chief Harold "Iron Bear" Collins.
On August 8, Ron pursued Jon Anderson
- Jon Anderson, lead singer for Yes, was scheduled to appear at the mall near my home. I went there for the appearance, but he did not show until late, and when he did, he walked around, shook hands with the crowd and left.
What a bummer! Foiled again.
During May, Steve pursued WOTC Autographs
- I exchanged a ton of e-mail with Patricia Krause who apparently handles the youth programs of WOTC. She agreed to see what she could do. In return, I had to tell her a whole lot of stuff about Scouting, particularly about Boys Life and Scouting magazine. If either of them starts running M:TG articles or ads, it'll probably be because of me.
During April, May and June, Ron explored getting an autograph from John "Spider" Salley
- My neighbor, Chip McNeer is a mortgage broker and worked on a mortgage for John Salley.
When I told him I was looking for autographs, he said that he could get one from John, no problem.
To date, there has been a problem, no autograph. I think that this one will pan out over time.
During April and May, Ron pursued Adam Sandler and Adam Covert
- The guy in the office next to mine is named Steve Covert. His son is an actor, best known for appearing in Adam Sandler's movies. As a practical matter, he is actually Adam Sandler's best friend; they are roommates, he produced Adam's album and was the road manager for his tour. For those who have seen the movies, he was the Caddy in Hapy Gilmour and was the guy in the obnoxious red suit that danced with Drew Barrymore in The Wedding Singer. Anyway, Steve told me that he could hook me up with some autographed pictures or memorabilia. He has not produced as of July 31, 1998. Hopefully, he will deliver at some point.
On April 23, 1998, Ron Donohue met General Norman Schwartkopf
- I was attending an Institutional Investor Forum for REIT Investors at the Ritz-Carlton on Palm Beach. The event was psonsored by Lehman Brothers Smith Barney and General Schwartzkopf was the luncheon speaker. After the meal and speech, I went up, stood in line, and shook his hand. I asked for the autograph on the luncheon menu, explaining it was for a Boy Scout group. He had just finished a speech on leadership in which he said that "you do not have to go to Washington, D.C. to see leadership, just go to your local school or church where the Boy Scouts have their meetings and you can see real leaders, every day of the week." He told me he would be proud to help out our autograph collecion.
On 7/23/98, Steve pursued Robin Leach
- A friend met him somewhere (details later) and said that he would be bumping into him again at the Windsor Casino Opening. I asked him to try getting an autograph for us if he didn't think it would be an imposition.
Late in April, Steve began chasing WOTC/TSR Autographs
- Bolstered by my success with Steve Jackson and Aaron Allston, I sent a note to Peter Adkison, president of Wizards of the Coast, asking about getting autographs of some of the big time staffers there.
I was refered to Customer Service.
On 4/8/98, Steve mailed Allyson Hannigan
- She plays Willow on Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. I thought it would be pretty easy, easier than the rest of the cast, because I read that she reads all her own fan mail and is a big Dr. Suess fan.
I applied my own bizarre poetic talents to see if I could parlay them into a cool autograph.
On 4/8/98, Steve mailed Aaron Allston
- Aaron's autograph was also in the bag before I mailed my SASE; I was able to contact him by e-mail first too.
On 4/8/98, Steve mailed Steve Jackson
- This one was pretty easy, since I had emailed him first and he said it would be happy to autograph something for us.
During April, Ron & Steve discussed pursuing autographs
- This decision had two primary factors -- first, we wanted to have something new and different for this Winter Camp; second, Ron thought he had a pretty good line on getting a John Sally autograph. It was decided that we would go ahead and try it.
